Dear Mr. President:
I extend warm greetings and
congratulations to you and the Polish people as you celebrate Poland’s
Independence Day on November 11.
In the 85 years since Poland
returned to the ranks of sovereign states, Poles have overcome
formidable challenges to their dream of a truly free and prosperous
nation. During my visit to Kraków this year, I was deeply gratified to
experience once more the grandeur of Poland’s culture and history and
to witness again the vibrant, open society that the Polish people have
forged from the ashes of totalitarianism and repression.
Our
nations share a centuries-old commitment to the principles of freedom
and democracy, and Americans greatly admire the strength of courage and
conviction that Poland has displayed in the vital struggle against
terrorism and tyranny around the globe. Poland is a sincerely valued
ally and I am confident that our steadfast bonds of friendship will
continue to strengthen in the coming year.
Sincerely,
George W. Bush
