Twelve companies from nine Northeast states are in Poland on a business development mission October 4-8 sponsored by the Eastern Trade Council (ETC), an organization created to increase cooperation among Northeastern U.S. states in export development.
Maureen Mezei, who was the principal mission organizer along with the U.S. Commerce Department’s Foreign Commercial Service (FCS) Office in Warsaw, noted: “There are numerous Northeast companies poised to benefit from increased trade with Poland. Poland is the largest new member of the European Union, making it a top market for expansion opportunities for U.S. exporters.”
Participating companies represent a diverse mix, ranging from large multinational corporations to small family run businesses. The firms represent a variety of industry sectors, including medical devices, telecommunications, Internet security, environmental technology, defense, financial services and art reproduction. The companies are from Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
Delegates are having meetings in two important commercial centers in Poland: Warsaw and Krakow. The group is also meeting with government officials, including public sector representatives from the sub-national level.
Mezei added that this is ETC’s second mission to Poland, and that the region’s trade directors hoped to build on the success of the first mission and strengthen trade ties with several Polish regions. New York Assemblyman Robert Straniere from Staten Island is leading the delegation.
The Eastern Trade Council seeks to strengthen state and regional economic competitiveness in the global marketplace by sharing trade development information, jointly promoting regional products, and collectively advocating for federal trade promotion programs and policies, which will benefit the region. The ETC is supported by annual appropriations from its 11 member jurisdictions.
