U.S. Ambassador to Poland Victor Ashe was the guest of honor at the 231st birthday celebration of the United States Marine Corps held in Warsaw, Poland on November 11. The celebration, a black tie ball, also served as an opportunity to honor the Embassy’s Marine Security Guard Detachment for their service protecting the U.S. Embassy. Major Donald Thieme, U.S. Marine Corps and Naval Attaché at U.S. Embassy Warsaw, delivered remarks reflecting on his 23-year career in the Marine Corps. “The Long Red Line comes from the first battles of our Republic, through Belleau Wood, the jungles of Central America, across the coral of Tarawa, through the black sands of Iwo Jima and blasted caves of Okinawa, to the trenches and mountains of Vietnam, to the sands of many a desert wasteland – and it stands erect, silent, and proud – proud of where it has been and what it has done, and confident of its future, equal to any challenge, longing for a fierce fight. Some day the bugle shall faintly sound in the distance as we too, hand down to others our legacy of service in our Corps of Warriors and successive generations of men and women of character step forward to take their place in the Long Red Line as Marines,” said Major Thieme.
