22 November 2005

During an introductory meeting with Polish Mufti Tomasz Miskiewicz, Ambassador Ashe said that “Americans cherish our freedom to worship and we remain committed to welcoming individuals of all religions.” The Ambassador met with Mufti Miskiewicz, the first Mufti in Poland in over 60 years on November 21 at the Embassy. Ambassador Ashe encouraged continued cooperation by Muslims with other religious communities in Poland. The Ambassador gave personal examples of Muslim life in America by noting his own work with the local Muslim community when he was mayor of Knoxville. The Mufti thanked the Ambassador and stressed that the Polish Muslim community is an excellent example of how peaceful coexistence is possible, even when one religion is a tiny minority amid a vast majority.
