Embassy Raises About $250,000 … and Counting Planning for a budget of a half-million dollars, the U.S. Embassy has reached the half-way point in its fundraising for the upcoming New New Yorkers and their friends festival to be held in Warsaw June 25 - July 5, 2004. So far, a dozen sponsors have signed on to become part of the event, and two corporations -- Johnson & Johnson and Janssen-Cilag -- have become principal sponsors. The New New Yorkers Festival will showcase the contributions of Polish émigrés have made to American culture. Polish, Polish-American and non-Polish artists who have collaborated with or have been influenced by their Polish counterparts in the creative ferment of New York City will be featured. The festival will showcase a full range of cultural events: music, dance, film, theater, literature and the visual arts -- all staged at cultural venues throughout Warsaw. "I think the most exciting thing about the festival is introducing to Poles an aspect of their culture that most of them didn't even know about," says the Embassy's Public Affairs Counselor and Event Organizer Andrew Koss. So far, the festival includes more than 30 events. It's become so popular that organizers have had to begin limiting participation to fit the schedule. "The telephone keeps ringing -- even my cell phone number, which I don't give out!" says Event Co-organizer Iza Szarek. "It's coming together quite nicely. There are events for everybody -- for younger generations, as well as for those who knew the artists before they emigrated to the U.S." Other sponsors include: Citibank Handlowy, Reader's Digest, HBO, American Chamber of Commerce, American Airlines, Warsaw Destination Alliance, Motorola, Hogan & Hartson, Amway, Nationwide, McDonalds, American Express and General Motors. Information about New New Yorkers -- including sponsorship information -- is updated regularly on the festival website: www.newnewyorkers.pl.
