Former President George H.W. Bush, the 41st President of the United States, is the recipient of the Jan Nowak-Jeziorański Award, which was established last year.
A delegation from Wrocław, including Mayor Rafał Dutkiewicz and his wife, presented Mr. Bush with the award on May 13 for "his contribution in overthrowing Communism and regaining independence for Poland."
The ceremony took place at Mr. Bush’s family home in Kennebunkport, Maine. Amb. Ashe arranged and participated in the event.
The award is sponsored by the Wrocław city government, Wrocław University, the Ossolineum institute, and the College Fund of Eastern Europe.
This is the second annual presentation. Last year’s award went to Tadeusz Mazowiecki, Poland’s first prime minister.
It was Jan Nowak-Jeziorański’s wish that this award be established. He died in January of 2005.
