U.S. Agency for International Development helps Poland serve as a model to others

Over the last decade, Poland has been very successful in transforming its banking and financial sectors into a capitalist system. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) provided advice and support for certain parts of the process. The transformation has been so successful that many other countries in the region have turned to Poland for advice. And Poland has been willing to share its experiences

In 2001, the National Bank of Poland, in cooperation with USAID, created a modern high technology training center just outside of Warsaw under its Training Institute for Banking Supervision, or TIBS. Since November 2001, the National Bank of Poland has hosted three seminars at which more than 75 banking supervisors and inspectors from 17 different countries, ranging from Albania to Kazakhstan, have participated.

U.S. Ambassador to Poland Christopher R. Hill and USAID Regional Mission Director Hilda Arellano attended the graduation ceremony for the financial experts who participated in the most recent series of workshops (November 2002). The United States applauds Poland's success to date in launching TIBS, and has a strong interest in seeing this initiative continue to succeed.
