A group of nineteen Iraqi political, business, and societal leaders from the city of Hillah traveled throughout Poland for two weeks from September 13-27 to receive training in civil society development. The governor of Babil province, a leading prosecutor in Hillah, as well as various Provincial Council members and business leaders participated in informational sessions and workshops with Polish local and national political and business leaders. The classes and meetings have given the group a solid foundation in governance upon which they can return to Iraq and build. Through his translator, the head of the delegation, Babil Governor Waleed Aumran Al Janabi explained, “Poland provided an excellent opportunity to view a country that has made the transition from a central economy to a thriving western country. It is a good example for Iraq to follow.” Hillah, the capitol of the Babil province, is located in the center of the Shiite heartland and serves as the crossroads of Iraq. Known anciently as Babylon, the area enjoys a rich historic and cultural heritage. Throughout the past year a large number of the Polish forces serving in Iraq have been based out of this strategically located city. This training program was funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) - Office of Transition Initiatives and supported locally by UNILOB. |
