Ambassador Ashe in North-East Poland
28 April 2006During his April 20 – 22 trip to Northeastern Poland, Ambassador Ashe met with several prominent political and cultural leaders of the region. He discussed the challenges facing the municipalities of the region and possible avenues for cooperation with Vice Mayor Wlodzimierz Marczewski of Suwalki, Mayor Leszek Cieslik of Augustow, Mayor Janusz Nowakowski of Elk, and Mayor Krzysztof Waszkiewicz of Grajewo. Ambassador Ashe revisited similar topics with the Starosta of Elk, Tomasz Mariusz Andrukiewicz, and the Voivod of Podlaski Province, Jan Dobrzynski. Bishop of Elk, His Eminence Jerzy Mazur, also hosted Ambassador Ashe. The Ambassador also visited two of the region’s magnificent national parks and talked with Zdzislaw Szkiruc, Director of Wigry National Park, and Adam Sienko, Director of Biebrza National Park, about opportunities for developing Poland’s national park network. In Sejny, Michal Moniuszko talked with Ambassador Ashe about the Borderland Foundation’s educational outreach programs. Ambassador Ashe also toured Bialystok’s famous Polmos vodka factory, and was hosted by Chairman of the Board Henryk Wnorowski and Finance Director Boguslaw Wojtach.
